We recently enjoyed hosting an open lunch with Prof Donald Fairbairn, which gathered students, ministry staff and local residents.

What do the Greek Church Fathers and Evangelicalism today have in common? Don Fairbairn helped us to discover their shared inheritance, exploring how the Fathers’ understanding of Christ, salvation and the life of the mind anticipated and enriched the emphases of evangelicalism.

Professor Donald Fairbairn is Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at Union School of Theology. He is also the Robert E. Cooley Professor of Early Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

An Introduction to Mere Christian Hermeneutics

Our recent open evening with Prof Vanhoozer provided a great opportunity for fellowship amongst local students, academics and ministry staff, introducing them to key questions about evangelical biblical interpretation today, demonstrating the ongoing foundational research based at the Cambridge Christian Study Centre.

How should we interpret Scripture? Vanhoozer helped us situate ourselves in our evangelical context today, one which often feels torn between different emphases emerging from different church traditions and cultural backgrounds, and from differences between biblical and systematic theology.

Vanhoozer provoked us to consider how the gospel itself enable us to navigate these emphases in a way that we are enriched rather than pulled apart by this diversity. He drew on his transfigural framework from his recent book Mere Christian Hermeneutics, and offered a series of two talks, with dinner in between.
